SPRING CLEAN MORE THAN JUST YOUR HOME

We are just 3 days out from officially entering Spring. The birds are chirping and new life is about to begin blooming. Animals will begin to emerge again. Spring is so symbolic to our renewal from dark and cold days to sunny and warmer days. It’s also a reminder for us to Spring clean which many of us relate to our homes. I want to give you 3 ways that you can Spring Clean or Renew Your Life, not just your home.

But let’s start with the home since that is the most common place we begin when we think of spring cleaning. It’s an opportunity for us to dig deeper into the crevices of our homes and remove the dust, the allergens that keep us living an optimal life.

We also clean in a way that is different than our weekly or biweekly schedules of maintaining a clean home. Our windows get refreshed. Our blinds are renewed, our floors restores and our home feels like a brand new place to rest our heads.

I don’t know about you but I am a total sucker for a spotless home. Which having kids makes it feel almost impossible to achieve. Spring cleaning though just lifts my mood and makes me feel better. Amiright?

So aside from our homes, we also can take the opportunity to spring clean our life in a way that leaves us feeling refreshed and renewed. We can clean out the corners of our life that are just no longer serving us any more.

Spring Clean Your Closet: I know I know … getting rid of clothes may be one of the most difficult things to let go of. I fall into the trap of “someday this will fit” and what happens is that I buy clothes that compliment my body now and hoard clothes that no longer fit. Unfortunately, when we hold ourselves hostage to clothes that may fit again someday, we also create a limiting belief in our minds that we are not good enough yet.

I’m sure you’ve said “I’ll feel so much better when I can fit into those jeans again!” I know this one liner all too well. It goes with the act of trying those jeans on over and over again to only be disappointed they didn’t fit - A G A I N!!!

And from that point, we can trigger ourselves into a downward spiral of why we are not good enough. We link our body to happiness. We box ourselves into a pair of pants that we could simply bless and let go.

So by Spring Cleaning our closets we allow ourselves to let go of the things that no longer serve us, right? That includes clothes that can create a toxic or damaging thought process around our bodies. We are not meant to fit into clothes. Clothes are meant to fit us.

Here’s my plan for spring cleaning my closet - I am going to start with my bedroom closet because the truth is, I have clothes in multiple spots (the seasonal clothes that get stored away, the clothes in my bedroom closet, the clothes in my dresser, the coat closet, etc).

Whatever is in my closet, is the first point of attack. If I haven’t worn it in the last year, chances are I won’t wear it again unless it’s something seasonal or occasional like a dress for a wedding. The seasonal and occasional things I will try on and if they don’t fit, bless and release to the donate pile.

And that’s that!

The next spot to spring clean is our goals.

Where am I at as I enter a new season of growth?
Am I on track from what I wanted at the beginning of the year or do I need to reassess?

Things change. Life can move you into a different direction.
Taking a moment to check in with yourself and what you want from the rest of the year, is a great way to make this year better than the last.

Here are the questions I plan to ask myself:

  1. What is most important to me moving forward?
  2. How do I want to feel?
  3. What can I do moving forward that will help me achieve this?

I believe it’s important to know how you want to FEEL. If you’ve been here for a while with me then you know I’m all about what feeling we are after. If you set a thing goal like losing weight, it’s because you’re after the FEELING you think losing weight will give you. So jump ahead and identify what feeling you want first.

Ok - we are cruising through these.

The last and probably, the most important is your thoughts. Spring clean your thoughts. What are you telling yourself (that nobody else hears)? Are you encouraging or criticizing? Are you going after what you want or talking yourself out of it? What is the story you are allowing into your life?

The story we tell ourselves is the number one way to excel in life or feel frustrated.

For me, I do this every day. I am most intentional in this area of my life because I know it impacts not only me but my family as well. I refuse to push my limiting beliefs onto my children. That is my motivator in this area. I want to be better for me but as you know - we will always do more for others than ourselves. So I use my kids as my reason to fix the broken story I tell myself.

What can you use a motivator?

This is a quick episode but I think it’s going to be impactful if you spring clean these three things. Let’s recap:

  1. Spring Clean Your Closet. Holding onto things that no longer fit into your life and onto your body will free you in many ways.
  2. Spring Clean Your Goals. Are you still wanting the same thing you were pursuing Jan 1? Do you need to reassess and create a new goal for yourself?
  3. Spring Clean Your Thoughts. Check in on what you’re telling yourself and how you think about life. Is it more positive or negative? Are you living in a growth mindset or fixed mindset? Are you feeling happy or frustrated? The story playing in your head is the driver of your life.
