Are You a Victim to Society?

Uncategorized Sep 28, 2018

Do you feel like you should mom a certain way because that's how others do it? Or you're not pretty / thin / smart enough? Or you're a failure because you don't have a college degree?

These are just some of the ways I see society grab people by the balls (for a lack of a better term) and make them feel less than. Quite frankly, it's bullshit. I'm so sick of society making people feel bad about themselves. We live in a world where we should be able to be whatever we want AND feel good about it - as long as we're not being an asshole to someone.

Instead, society brainwashes us to believe we have to be a certain way. Let me share some examples ...

"Oh you don't sleep your baby on his/her back?! Well, ya know the doctor says you should!" OR "Oh you let your child sleep with you?! I would never allow that!" Queue both of these in a condescending voice.

Then there is the beauty industry that makes people feel they need to look a certain way or are not worthy of the title "beautiful!" Well, babes I have news for you - BEAUTY IS WAYYY MORE THAN YOUR PHYSICAL APPEARANCE! Yes, I'm writing in caps because I'm just as guilty for allowing myself to believe that if my stomach isn't flat and my thighs touch then I'm not pretty!

We put these standards on ourselves that are totally unrealistic and it's time to start shining a light on what is real and what is not. Let me be the first to say - airbrushing is not real. Photoshopping yourself is not real. And if nothing else, stop comparing yourself to people on social media!

Do I dare talk about careers and college and entrepreneurship? Just because you don't have a piece of paper that says you're a college graduate does NOT mean you can't perform a job. There I said it! College does not qualify you to do a certain job better than someone who didn't go to college. Experience, in my opinion, should supersede an piece of paper.

I mean, who the hell knows what they want to be at 18 yrs old? I know I had no clue. And if I could do it all over again, my career path who be totally different. It's because I'm older, more experienced and know what interests me and what does not. College is absurdly expensive and more people than not are working in a field outside the one their degree is in. This leads me to ask - why do we encourage kids to go to college right out of high school when most are just too young to know what they want to do for the rest of their lives?

And what makes me even more heated is that WE ARE SOCIETY! WE have the choice to change it all. Instead of judging, perhaps we encourage more. Instead of looking down on others, perhaps we work to lift them up.

Am I the only one who thinks about these things?

Being a mom now has made me think so much more about how easy it can be to love, forgive and always try. And that is why I am giving birth to a new series on my social accounts called Lessons from a Mom and Lessons from a Child. Be sure to follow along on Instagram and Facebook

Until next time, give society the middle finger and do YOU!
