It only came to me after watching this video clip, from the movie Sing, 967 times. My daughter Natalie and I jam to this video. Like get-up-and-dance-like-nobody-is-watching kinda jam session.
But today it hit me like a ton of bricks. It packed meaning today in a different way. Here's the clip I'm referring to. Take a look and maybe you'll be moved like me ...
Ok, perhaps you saw the same thing as me and maybe not.
When I watched this morning I thought "if this character never took the chance in being uncomfortable to showcase his awesomeness then he would continue to play small (be miserable) and the crowd, who went wild afterwards, would have never experienced the feelings of excitement they had."
Now, yes I get it! You're probably thinking "Heather - it's a DAMN movie!" And I know, it's a movie but look at it from a real life perspective.
We play small out of fear.
Fear of failing.
Fear of others judging us.
Fear of [insert negative feeling].
We hide behind that fear because we are afraid of the outcome. Rather than taking a chance at being amazing, we settle for mediocrity. We settle for being miserable in the life we live. Ya know, living life's known hell instead of taking a chance on an unknown heaven.
Am I right?
We want what is safe. What is familiar. Problem is, that isn't always what make us the happiest. Experiencing new things and learning and growing is the gravy to happiness.
Now imagine if we chose to get uncomfortable and face the fear head on but with a little hope and grace.
Side note: did you know that fear and hope are both future based. Fear is thinking of the future in a negative way and hope is seeing it in a positive way. Neither have happened. We get to decide what our minds focus on. So cool, right?
Life would be so different!
So we take on our fear with the hope that we smash it out of the park like Johnny did. Do this and we serve not only yourself but so many others.
We are here to showcase our uniqueness, not hide it.
I think it's time we own our truth.
We step into the person we want to be.
The person we are meant to be.
And damnit, the world around us is going to celebrate with us.
If you have been thinking about doing something new, do it today. Or start the process of doing it today. Let that burning desire out of your head and into the world. This place we live in needs more people following what truly makes them happy.
