The Passion Behind the Podcast

table time Feb 11, 2020

I’M GOING TO GIVE IT TO YOUR STRAIGHT - THIS PODCASTING IDEA CAME FROM A PLACE OF DESPERATION. I WAS DESPERATE FOR CONNECTION ON A DEEPER LEVEL.

Being a work from home mom - of two young girls - I don’t get nearly enough adult interaction. But I don’t like just any kind of interaction … I’m just not one for surface level talk allll the time.

I want to go deep.
I want to know your story.
I want to know what makes you YOU.
Like where you struggle, what you're passionate about and all the guts of who you are and why.

After all, we find the best friendships through connection right?

And we connect when we are similar in certain areas.

I was starting to realize that I was lacking in adult conversation -- other than the little time I chat with my husband each day and for the few minutes I see my mom when I pick up the kids.

See watches them for me while I work - which is a dream!

I began to rack my brain on how I can fulfill this gap in my life. And let’s be honest, making friends as adults is NOT easy. A friend once related it to like dating.

It can feel stressful.
Unknowing.
And often doesn’t turn into what we want.

And then it came to me - what if I start a podcast where I get to interview people.
Learn about them.

Where did they come from.
What steps did they take to find the success they have.
And offer some kind of value to others in the process of it all.

So with a ton of excitement I shot my husband a text and said these exact words:
“I’m having a shiny thing moment and think a podcast may be something on my horizon. I want to interview people who have found success but focus on where they started.

Here are my thoughts … we all start somewhere but often people only see the success and not the beginning and grit. So it will be a way for mainly women to not feel alone and be more motivated to start whatever it is they’re after.”

And like the great supporter ever - he wrote me back and said “That’s a great idea.”

Let me share a little history on me and why this podcast seemed so fitting and like the best idea ever!

When I was a little girl, my family would often say “Heather Walters on the scene” because I was always soooo curious. I was the little girl who asked question after question - like most kids do. But I wanted the details. And I kept doing what kids do … asking and wondering.

But at some point, probably during my adolescent years or during school age, I didn’t ask many questions for fear of asking a stupid question or looking nosy but my curiosity remained.

And then I got to college and learned connection on a totally different level.
Being away from home and all that you know -  IS life changing.

I made some incredible friends and I can honestly say that college was my favorite life experience. I built lasting memories with friends I’ll never forget.

Lots of drunk conversations that I always called heart to hearts. Ya know, the kind where you just pour everything out. And find you relate to someone you’d never thought you’d be friends with. I LIVED for those conversations. I always felt love afterwards. Feeling I have a hard time putting into words.

But during these conversations I would ask questions to learn more about people and what made them them. I was still that little curious girl but about people now.
And then after college, I felt like life was happening to me instead of for me.
I was going through the motions of life but never really feeling fulfilled. I dated all the wrong guys who taught me all the right lessons. I dug myself out of financial debt more than once. And one day I decided to take a chance on an opportunity that was completely foreign to me.

I started a direct marketing business. Everyone was so inviting and welcoming. Questions were encouraged. And that little girl inside of me, came alive again.

During my 6 years of coaching I connected to people on a different level. Probably because women allowed themselves to be vulnerable and share the struggles they were having. And because I had similar struggles, we could relate to one another.
But what was once exciting, didn’t feel as exciting after I had kids. I was struggling to find the time to be the coach I wanted to be. I felt as though I was letting these women down and decided to hang up my hat in the direct marketing world.

With that decision came lots of back and forth. Am I doing the right thing - am I giving up on something that fueled me so passionately?

In the end, I knew it was the right thing - but my desire for connection started to lack and I felt it.

So here we are, me recording a podcast for those of you out there that want the answers.

How is she so successful?
Where did it all begin for her?
What steps did she take to get there?
And all the guts in between.

And because I’m all about the how, the steps to take action, each episode will give you the opportunity to take what you learned and implement something THAT day.
If you find yourself in a place where part of your life is lacking, like there is just something missing. My tip for you today is take some time to find what that thing is for you.

And if you know what it is, how can you fulfill that it in a way that fits your life right now? Don’t overcomplicate it. It needs to make sense.

For example, starting a podcast made sense for me because I get to chat with amazing people, learn about them and learn from them all the while serving a bigger purpose.

I will leave you with this …
In our lifetime, we get an average of about 30,000 morning to live.
For me at the age of 39, I only have about 16,000 left.
If you want to start or do THAT thing. Don’t wait.
Time waits for no one.
From my heart to yours, NOW is your time!
