Why Diets Don't Work - Part 1
Beth Smeeton is a master certified Health & Life Coach who specializes in helping women find peace with food & body so they can break free from the binge-restrict rollercoaster.
She teaches women how to tune into their own body wisdom and nourish themselves from a place of self care rather than fear, judgement, and external rules.
This approach clears out the confusion and overwhelm when it comes to figuring out what, how much, and when to eat which results in REAL sustainable habits that last.
Beth offers private one-on-one coaching for women who are ready to look underneath the hood and examine what’s continuing to keep them stuck in the yo-yo dieting cycle.
Her curated coaching programs help women get in touch with their inner guide through strategic listening and questions, cognitive behavior therapy, visualizations, mindful eating practices, and so much more!
Beth is on a mission to empower women all over the country to take their power back so their incessant food & body thoughts no longer take away from life experiences!
I’m SO excited to have Beth on as a guest. I first found her on Instagram and knew I had to follow her. I, like many, have struggled most of my life with thinking I had to diet or restrict myself around food in some way.
We are so ingrained to believe weightloss is the answer to happiness. Smaller = happier. In 2019, I started my journey to change this way of thinking. Today I’m thrilled to learn what it means to be free of food rules and more confident in body.
I wanted to hear more about how Beth helps women to move away from the diet mindset and learn how to embrace life without rules.
Beth explains that how she "helps women find true freedom is without using any apps or external rules." Her method is to "teach women how to connect and listen to their bodies and not just how to listen but to actually trust and honor what their body is communicating to them."
Food freedom has always seemed so far fetched for me because I have always felt that when I had food rule, I was in more control. I shared this with Beth and she opened my eyes to another perspective.
In response to me sharing about feeling out of control with no rules, Beth challenged my way of thinking by explaining that without rules, we are more empowered and ultimately in more control than when we have rules.
When we allow ourselves to eat what we want, how much we want and when we want - we can full control because nothing is off limits any longer. She did go on to talk about how this process does take time and that it is not a way to go full throttle like when you have a restrict/binge mindset.
If you're out there and thinking "oh I could NEVER live without rules, without counting calories or macros" then don't you worry because I asked Beth what she would tell you. She says "she may feel out of control without counting calories or tracking her food but there is where the magic happens, as counter intuitive as it may seem, letting go of all the rules allows you to take charge around food and not feel powerless around it."
When you do this, you allow yourself to rebuild. And she further explains, "food isn't the issue. It's more about the rules and regulations and stories and beliefs that we have around food that holds us back." When you unravel those limiting beliefs, you allow yourself to eat again without fear or micro-managing.
I asked Beth what was one actionable step that someone could take TODAY that would make a difference in their life.
She wants you to know that become an intuitive eater is a process. It takes time and that the timeframe depends on the person. Beth's one tip is that food freedom always begins with body freedom. She is encouraging you to accept your body and become neutral with it. You can do this by looking at the environment around you. And social media is a great example. Pay attention to how you feel around the accounts you're following. If it's anything negative, you can mute or unfollow those accounts. Begin to follow accounts that have a body that is similar to yours so you can neutralize your body.
